#49.5 - Fit Tips Friday, part deux

Posted by Tami in ,

Aight, here are the tips I'm going to employ (thanks for the comments and emails, rock stars!)

  • First, I will do NOTHING before working out, other than use the bano. No email, blog checks, Google reader updates... nada. Thanks, Britt :)

  • This ties into Rose's awesome suggestion- I will reward myself for working out. For me, personally, I think this will be SATC reruns I have DVR'd while I sort the mail, but only after I've worked out. She also had a great idea for list checking-off, but I don't have enough to do tomorrow to have a whole list.

  • Lastly, I also will do what Molly mentioned-- I'll remind myself that there's no way I'll have time to work out on Monday and Tuesday (church stuffs) so I'm earning those days off by working out this weekend.
I am committing to doing SOMETHING on Sunday for at least 20 minutes, no matter what it is, and tomorrow will be a full on cardio and strength training sweat-fest.

I can't believe I'm about to admit this, but a teensy- seriously, minutely small- part of me actually kind of misses working out. Not just the feeling afterward, but the energy running through my body during a workout. That's just crazy.

Have a great weekend, friends! Hopefully your weather won't suck as much as ours does here!

It was just snowing.

In the middle of April.

In Seattle.

Stupid.

Ok, first I just have to point people to an inspiring post from another blogger- really, her whole blog is so inspiring because she cut her body in half by eating well and exercising, exactly what I aim to do. She's in the maintenance phase while I am hardly out of the starting blocks, so it's great to read about where I am headed.

It's nice to remember that despite my pork out session last night I am still on this road and one bad night isn't going to slap 25 pounds back on my body. That said, I can't get content. I commit, right here, that I WILL work out this weekend.

So that brings me to Fit Tips Friday- for the newbies, I'll propose a question, you'll reply by leaving a comment (or emailing me at foodefight@gmail.com) and then around 5-ish PDT I'll pick some of the tips that I can apply to me. Usually I try to touch back on how it all went circa Monday.

The question is this:

What incentives do you give yourself to work out on the weekends? When you really, REALLY would rather just watch Sex and the City reruns, or at least sort through the month of snail mail you've been putting off, how do you motivate yourself to work out? I'm not looking for a pep talk here, either-- I can easily tell myself that working out will feel so good on Wednesday when I post another big weight loss, but 95% of the time that doesn't get my lard-butt off the couch!

So, people, hit me with your best shot! I'd love to hear what you do... and, to be fair, food is not a good incentive, either. I want practical and random stuff that I'll get excited about :)

I have to tell you that, though last night was ridiculous, usually eating is only an issue on weekends, and I struggle to make myself work out far more than I struggle with eating. Don't get me wrong, I struggle with both, but if I were tracking this on a calendar, I'd have far more stars for eating well than stars for working out. Which I should be doing, actually. Not stars, per se, but I should be tracking myself on a calendar, because I love looking for patterns...

Big surprised, I went off on a tangent. I'll shut the pie hole (literally! Read last night's post!) now, you just send me some tips!!

Ok, so I actually got some pretty sweet tips! These are the ones I love:

  • Dish up only half a serving/spoon/scoop full of everything you want to eat. Eat slowly, focusing on the flavors and textures. Then go back for seconds for only the things you truly enjoy/love-- and no more than a serving. Absolutely no thirds-- but see if you can take some leftovers home-- bring a plastic container along. (le lovely Darla)

  • It helps me eat slowly and more purposefully if I put my utensils down between every single bite and also take a swallow of water between most bites. (le rambunctious Rhani)

I think those are great! Start with under-portion sizes, put the fork/spoon/whatever down between bites and truly enjoy the food. I will sincerely try to do this! Also, I'll work on really thanking Christ for not just the food, but for the occasion and the opportunity to be with family and commemorate His atonement.

Have a wonderful Easter!

Well, hello lovelies!

Work has been IN. FREAKING. SANE. This week so I am sorry for the infrequency of my posts. I normally try to write every day, but I haven't had even two minutes for even little quickie ones. Lame, I know.

So now for Fit Tips Friday: this weekend, as I hope you all know, is Easter. For my husband and I, it's about commemorating the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and the atonement for our sins. For my family, it's mostly about ham.

So... Sunday is the fam-ham gathering. Here's the question: how do you stay in control in these big-family meal settings? How do you enjoy the food (not bringing your own salad- LAME) but not engorge yourself on 4 helpings of your Grandma's famous mashed potatoes? I need your help, so ring em on in!

I'll post the ones I see fitting my life the best around 5 pm PDT today.

PS Go Zags!!

Ok... I only received one Fit Tip, so either you people all have naturally amazing arms toned toned to perfection without an ounce of effort, or you shafted me!

Either way, I did get the one... here's the one tip- push-ups.  I cannot lie- I'd rather endure receiving 40 papercuts all over my feet than to do 5 push-ups.  But... tomorrow I am setting a big crazy goal of doing 20 push-ups.

I'll let you know how that goes...

All right, rock stars, keepin' this one short and sweet:  it's Fit Tips Friday.  You comment/e-mail/Facebook me your tips on the chosen topic and then by 5 pm or so (Pacific time... the best time zone in existence) I will post a few that strike me as most relevant to put into practice.  Monday I'll let you know how I did :)

Today's topic is exercises I can do at home that focus on my arms.  I do have 2 five pound lil' dumbbells, but I'd love to hear anything you do when you can't make it to the gym to get some toning action for your arms.  And so you know-- (that muscle in your shoulders below your neck that I can't remember the name of that gets worked when you do overhead presses) is really tight and I actually have to avoid working that one, so I need actual arm/chest specific exercises, not just upper body.

Ok, hit me!  I'm pumped to see what people do that I can start putting into my at-home workout routine!

So I have some good tips to work with- Rach's tip about walking to a place like the bakery is a great idea that I'll totally implement more when I live in Seattle and closer to relevant places! This weekend, though, I'm going to implement Darla's idea of making a to-do list, and I can't have my snack (a pre-chosen one, so I'm looking forward to that particular thing and I don't just pork out because "I earned it") until I get stuff done.

I'll give you more info on this tomorrow, since it's most relevant to tomorrow.

Speaking of, tomorrow is my 6 month wedding anniversary to the world's most incredibly wonderful man! Yay :)

I thought of something just now- I know I've had a few tips shared with me about little ways to help myself resist temptation just in the few weeks that I have had this blog going. But perhaps periodically I'll do a "Fit Tip Friday", just to get suggestions from people rolling in-- I know that the weekend is the hardest time for me to stay on track!

It comes down to two main reasons- for one, I eat differently on weekends. Primarily, it's more opportunities for snacking when I'm home because there's just more food there... even if we don't have snack food I find a way to snack on something. In addition, I just don't eat quite as healthy on weekends, try as I might. I think that's because there's a little more time for cooking, so my meal plans are different. Secondly, despite having way more time for it... I just don't work out quite as much as I should be on weekends. I could easily do 30-60 minutes worth of some aerobic activity on Saturday, even if it's playing Wii Sports or DDR. Jas and I could go for a walk on Sunday after church (we do LOVE Seattle, and we're right in the heart of it early on Sunday afternoons... there are some huge and gorgeous parks right by us... what is my excuse here??). I know these things with my head, but after having such a busy week every. Single. Week. Of. My. Life. I just tend to veg and watch TV on weekends, or take care of things I don't have time for during the week, like filing our bills or, like this weekend, filling out the job application for employment (I hope!) at Seattle Public Schools for the next school year.

So... I could use some tips from other people! Obviously, surrender to Christ comes also with practicality and I know that every woman, no matter how big or small, daily faces the battle to maintain her weight. I bet that 95%- possibly more- of women want to lose at least a few pounds at any given time and if a magic pill could do that for them with no side effects then they'd take it. So, every one of you reading my blog must have little tricks that you use for staying fit!

Thus, I am instilling Fit Tips Friday. It may not be every week, unless you all do start responding to me with lots of tips! What I'll do is by the end of the day pick a few (likely 1-3, depending on how many of you reply) to try and use in my life. I'll tell you all what I chose and after a sensible amount of time, tell you how they're working for me, and how I have adapted them to work in my life.

So... this week's Fit Tips Friday topic is, indeed, weekends/down time. How do you try to stay on track when you're off of your routine? What tips do you have for eating right and incorporating some exercise into your life when it's your much needed rest day? Let me know!

The easiest way is to leave a comment; if you don't have a Google account then those who know my e-mail and/or my Facebook info can message me that way. Just make sure to tell me if you don't want to be mentioned (I'll never say more than your first name, PS. Just for wisdom purposes).

I'm excited! Don't let me down- give me your tips! We can all encourage each other this way, and I love that!
