#21 - Fit Tips Friday, Edition One

Posted by Tami Hagglund in

I thought of something just now- I know I've had a few tips shared with me about little ways to help myself resist temptation just in the few weeks that I have had this blog going. But perhaps periodically I'll do a "Fit Tip Friday", just to get suggestions from people rolling in-- I know that the weekend is the hardest time for me to stay on track!

It comes down to two main reasons- for one, I eat differently on weekends. Primarily, it's more opportunities for snacking when I'm home because there's just more food there... even if we don't have snack food I find a way to snack on something. In addition, I just don't eat quite as healthy on weekends, try as I might. I think that's because there's a little more time for cooking, so my meal plans are different. Secondly, despite having way more time for it... I just don't work out quite as much as I should be on weekends. I could easily do 30-60 minutes worth of some aerobic activity on Saturday, even if it's playing Wii Sports or DDR. Jas and I could go for a walk on Sunday after church (we do LOVE Seattle, and we're right in the heart of it early on Sunday afternoons... there are some huge and gorgeous parks right by us... what is my excuse here??). I know these things with my head, but after having such a busy week every. Single. Week. Of. My. Life. I just tend to veg and watch TV on weekends, or take care of things I don't have time for during the week, like filing our bills or, like this weekend, filling out the job application for employment (I hope!) at Seattle Public Schools for the next school year.

So... I could use some tips from other people! Obviously, surrender to Christ comes also with practicality and I know that every woman, no matter how big or small, daily faces the battle to maintain her weight. I bet that 95%- possibly more- of women want to lose at least a few pounds at any given time and if a magic pill could do that for them with no side effects then they'd take it. So, every one of you reading my blog must have little tricks that you use for staying fit!

Thus, I am instilling Fit Tips Friday. It may not be every week, unless you all do start responding to me with lots of tips! What I'll do is by the end of the day pick a few (likely 1-3, depending on how many of you reply) to try and use in my life. I'll tell you all what I chose and after a sensible amount of time, tell you how they're working for me, and how I have adapted them to work in my life.

So... this week's Fit Tips Friday topic is, indeed, weekends/down time. How do you try to stay on track when you're off of your routine? What tips do you have for eating right and incorporating some exercise into your life when it's your much needed rest day? Let me know!

The easiest way is to leave a comment; if you don't have a Google account then those who know my e-mail and/or my Facebook info can message me that way. Just make sure to tell me if you don't want to be mentioned (I'll never say more than your first name, PS. Just for wisdom purposes).

I'm excited! Don't let me down- give me your tips! We can all encourage each other this way, and I love that!

4 battle cries

The best way for me to find time to work out (and as you probably could guess we don't typically have down or veg time on the weekends at this stage of our life!) is to attach it to something fun, if we can fit that in. For example we might go on a walk to the bakery, and since we pretty much never go out to eat that's something I will work for! I don't know if attaching it to something that costs $$ or is food is always a good idea, but it works for me sometimes.

Ask you're self if you're really hungry or just thirsty. For me I'm usually thirsty but my body is confused and thinks that that means I need a snack. Also, remind yourself how you are likely to feel after eating something: healthy? fat? disappointed? energetic? happy?
And finally, make a to do list and tell yourself you can have a predetermined snack after you finish the list. You'll have 1) worked for it 2) filled up some time that doesn't involve snacking 3) gotten things done and 4) by the time you're done with the to-do list, the craving might be gone!

p.s. I think this is a great idea because we will all learn something and it will keep you accountable to trying the tips and tricks!

i try to eat on a specific schedule, even on the weekend. if i eat every few hours (300-450 calories), i find that i'm hungry less often and craving snacks or junk food less
